My Trip Down 2011 Memory Lane

This year has been an interesting year. I was going to write an article about New Year's resolutions for 2012, but it seemed like a hypocritical thing for me to do (my resolutions are made with good intent but rarely followed through on).
Instead, I would like to take a trip to 2011 Memory Lane and remember 10 significant events from this year. So, grab my hand and follow me...
The Royal Wedding
Westminster Abbey was the location of The Royal Wedding on April 29. Prince William and Catherine "Kate" Middleton exchanged wedding vows, also including a prayer they wrote themselves, "God our Father, we thank you for our families; for the love that we share and for the joy of our marriage."
This wedding is sentimental for many because of people's love for Princess Diana. I still remember when his mother tragically died from a car accident and the forlorn face he wore at her funeral.
Osama bin Laden Is Found
According to MSNBC, Osama bin Laden, the man responsible for the terrorist attacks on 9/11 and the destruction of the World Trade Center, was found in a compound in Pakistan and killed after a gun battle with U.S. Navy SEALs and the CIA on May 2.
The hunt for Osama bin Laden lasted nearly ten years and is considered to be the largest manhunt in the world.
Do you think the U.S. government wasted time and money looking for Osama bin Laden?

New Tornado Records

Oprah Leaves Daytime Television
After a quarter of a century, The Oprah Winfrey Show taped its final episode. Oprah operated the longest talk show in history, beginning in 1986 and ending on May 25. She is also one of the richest woman in America, according to Forbes 400, with a net worth of $2.7 billion.
"We Are the 99 Percent"
Occupy Wall Street is a protest movement that began on September 17 in Manhattan's Financial District and has continued to spread. This protest is operated by a group of people who are tired of the economic condition of our country, partly due to the power that corporations and banks have over democracy.
Remembering Fallen Heroes
In honor of the people who lost or sacrificed their lives on September 11, 200e this date marks the 10-year anniversary to the terrorist attacks against our country. Nearly 3,000 people died that dieay, and more than 6,000 were injured.
Osama bin Laden masterminded the attack on our country resulting in the largest manhunt in this world. His capture and death was recent, and he was found in a compound in Pakistan and executed by U.S. Forces.
The World Trade Center was completely destroyed as two airplanes flew into them. Another plane was targeted at the Pentagon. For more information and heart-wrenching photographs, click on 9/11-The Day the Twin Towers Fell.
Do you know anyone who was personally affected by the terrorist attacks on 9/11?

Steve Jobs, Apple's co-founder, died on Wednesday, October 5 at the age of 56. He is called a "visionary leader" for Apple. He played a significant role in the development of the iPad, iPhone, and iPod and changed the history of computers and mobile phones.
A long battle with pancreatic cancer caused him to step down as Apple CEO before he passed away.
"The world has lost a visionary. And there may be no greater tribute to Steve's success than the fact that much of the world learned of his passing on a device he invented." ~ U.S. President Barack Obama ~

Thanks for the walk down memory lane JenJen. Unfortunately I am not too optimistic about 2012 and the impending election. (sigh)
Very interesting hub and many thanks for the journey back into 2011. Apart from the royal wedding that cheered most of us - not just in the UK - 2011 was a bad year for many people, especially as usual the 'common' folks as we are often called!
As to 2012? I don't hold out much hope of things improving in general but you never know. This might be the year though that the 'common' folks do decide that enough is enough and make their feelings and strengths known en masse!
Great hub + voted up!
Thanks for the memories. I had a very dear friend who made it out of the World Trade Center that awful day only to succumb to complications from hepatitis which he contracted way back in the Vietnam War and left damage behind in his body months after his escape.
Your hub had me reflecting on all that had impacted on my life in 2011. I kept a diary so it is easy to refresh the old memory.
However I have been blessed with much happiness unlike many poor people in the world and in particular those involved in the 9/11 tragedy.
May 2012 be kind to all mankind and best wishes to youself!
Thanks for the memories, jenjen. It's always good to reflect.
Good summary on 2011. I liked the voting stats. The royal wedding was a great highlight. I am still thinking through the hunt for Osama bin Laden. Seems the politics surrounding this topic weight greatly on the reasons why it was done.
Your choice of things to remember is excellent. These items all had an impact on our lives. I have to disagree with "the Current Population Survey, which is conducted by the Bureau of Census for the Bureau of Labor Statistics." Unemployment may look like it has gone down on paper but talk to those who have been unemployed long enough to run out of unemployment insurance and are still jobless! But, I digress. Your hub was nicely written and very interesting to read. Voted up and interesting.
I agree with tillsontitan. The unemployment rates only count the people drawing unemployment. Several of the people drawing unemployment reached their limit on how much they could earn and was simply denied more or extended benefits. So in essence they are just not counted anymore. Another "Big Lie" from out corrupt government. Your hub choices are nice though. Remembering the good things is what keeps you positive during the bad times.
Thank you for this trip down memory lane Jen and wishing you a very Happy 2012.
Hi Jen,
A great choice of significant events from 2011.
Wishing you all the best for 2012.
Interesting hub. I loved watching the marriage of the Prince to his new bride with my oldest son. It was a great moment to remember. : ) Thanks for the share!

Interesting to walk along memory lane with you, JenJen. I wonder what 2012 will bring: I can't say I'm too optomistic (but hopeful)
